Spinalonga Island, also known as Kalydon Island, is a small islet located in the Gulf of Elounda in northeastern Crete, Greece. It is famous for its rich history and the remnants of a Venetian fortress that still stands on the island. The island's strategic location made it an important stronghold throughout history. In the 16th century, the Venetians built a fortress on Spinalonga to protect the entrance to the Gulf of Elounda and the port of nearby ancient Olous. The fortress was considered impenetrable and played a significant role in defending the region against Ottoman attacks.
However, in the early 20th century, Spinalonga gained a different kind of notoriety. From 1903 to 1957, the island served as a leper colony, where people with leprosy were quarantined. At its peak, the colony was home to hundreds of patients who lived in isolation from the rest of society. In 1957, the leper colony was officially closed as the disease became treatable, and the last inhabitants left the island.
Today, Spinalonga Island is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors who are intrigued by its historical significance and haunting past. The Venetian fortress, with its well-preserved walls, watchtowers, and buildings, serves as a reminder of the island's military history. Additionally, visitors can explore the remnants of the leper colony, including the houses where patients lived and the church where they worshipped.
