Inchcolm Island is a small island located in the Firth of Forth, off the coast of Edinburgh, Scotland. The island is only about 1.5 kilometers long and 0.5 kilometers wide. It is though lucky enough to be home to some of the most stunning historic landmarks and natural features in Scotland. As you would expect, one of the most prominent features on Inchcolm Island is the Inchcolm Abbey itself. Interestingly, this well-preserved medieval abbey was founded in the 12th century by Augustinian monks. And moreover, it played an important role in the history of Scotland and was involved in a number of incredibly significant events. These include the Wars of Scottish Independence.
In addition to the abbey, Inchcolm Island is also home to a number of other historic structures. This includes a 16th-century gun battery and a World War II-era coastal defense battery. The island’s natural features include sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and a wide variety of seabirds.
